Have you noticed that the more you like, comment and share, start to get to know, what are complete strangers, the more that term ‘goodwill’ plays a part?
In my younger days, the term ‘goodwill was used over and over again. It was part and parcel of being in business and it sort of went out of fashion. The thought of doing someone a favour was also viewed as ‘what will it cost me?’
My very first job was as an Insurance clerk with the Co-op. My Grandfather used to take the mickey saying where were my Co-op stamps? Some of you may even remember them. Everyone knew everyone and it was not unusual for me to sent out to take a message to the local Bank Manager, it may be what we would call today, a referral for a new customer or an invite to lunch, a joint meeting, however, there was loads of goodwill in the town, everyone knew each other and worked together.
Then it just disappeared, why I really don’t know, but somehow to my surprise, it has re-appeared. Business owners are working together again, it may be a small favour that grows. It may be that they don’t even give it a thought, however I am watching it grow. We were out to dinner a little while ago, as it happened there were 6 marketing people around the table, we all knew each other, all from different companies. Was it difficult, stilted conversation, people on their guard? Completely the opposite, as we sat and laughed, took the mickey and updated each other on what services we are all now working on with the firm knowledge that there is enough business to go around and we each have skills that even though in the same industry - differ.
This further hit home as I was promoting our next
#LinkedinLocalBasingstoke
event. The
#Linkedinlocal
community behind the scenes is so supportive. To the point, we are visiting and promoting each other's events, helping each with tips and advice. With our event today I tagged people who had asked for more information, I tried to remember what each business owner was working on in their business, the next summit, workshop or download. I gave them a little free publicity promoting their business, in turn, they commented and shared and contacted us privately offering to help. We have had a day where every person we have come in contact with has added something special with most being complete strangers, a year, a month, or a week ago. See how quickly things can alter, people we have known less than a week can start to make a difference with a little goodwill.
I am not talking about giving away free products or services that will impact our income, just that a small gesture, a little effort that costs nothing that can makes such a difference to the next person, who in turn often will tell their friends.
When I watch what is happening with the people joining our meetings, the energy inside the room, the buzz and the willingness to help each other, I know that the effort is worthwhile. Last night two people who worked with each other in their 20's, now 20+ years later rekindled a long-forgotten friendship. How great is that!
